Blog Post # 15

Long term takeaways from this class:

  • test first, test during, test after, test, test, test
  • when designing algorithms, demand the weakest capabilities (e.g. iterable vs. indexable)
  • when designing containers, provide the strongest capabilities (e.g. indexable vs iterable)
  • build decorators on top of containers, iterators, and functions
  • utilize the benefits of being lazy (i.e. yield)
  • always look for reuse and symmetry in your code
  • collaboration is essential to the quality of your code and to your well-being in producing it

How well do you think the course conveyed those takeaways?

I personally feel that most of these…

  1. What did you do this past week?

I had a midterm for my data mining class on Tuesday, and the first part of my week was dedicated to studying for that. Thankfully, it was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. I had also put off doing my Computer Vision assignment as I had a lot of slip days left but started working on that on Thursday (day before it was due). It’s mostly done now with a few bugs to iron out but that shouldn’t be too hard. …

  1. What did you do this past week?

The first part of the week was mainly devoted to finishing up phase 3 of our websites. The one day extension was extremely welcome and gave us enough time to find and handle all the bugs in our application. When deploying the new version of our website, we ran into some major issues which were caused by a merge conflict but other than that, the phase went pretty smoothly. The past few days have been a lot slower. …

  1. What did you do this past week?

With the third phase of the project for this class due this Wednesday, a good portion of this week was spent on implementing sorting, filtering and searching for our website. Overall, this phase in my opinion has been a bit easier as I feel that I’m slowly getting more used to React and typescript. Projects and assignments were due for my other classes were due earlier in the week so those were completed as well. …

  1. What did you do this past week?

The first few days of the week went solely towards phase 2 of our project for this class. This phase was a lot more taxing personally but I feel that I learned a lot about React, flask and unit test tools for the different components of our project. The Wednesday and Thursday after the project was due was all about catching up on a couple of missed lectures and completing assignments for those classes. I’d also signed up for more phone interviews so those were completed as well. …

  1. What did you do this past week?

I had midterms or projects due in every class I am taking this semester, so I found myself either studying or completing some assignment for most of the week. I had three midterms (all CS classes) on Thursday alone so planning out how I was going to study for all of them throughout the week was challenging. With the second phase of our projects for this class due on Tuesday, I also spent some time finishing up the tasks assigned to me

  1. What did you do this past week?

I spent the first few days of the week completing phase 1 of our project for this class. We chose to write the static pages using React and being unfamiliar with it, learning the basics of the language arguably took the most time. I also spent some time getting in more internship applications as well as preparing for coding interviews. After Wednesday, I also spent some time outside everyday (Zilker, trails, etc) as the weather has been nothing but unbelievable.

What did you do this past week?

I spent the start of the week finishing up my first assignment for my computer vision class. The assignments are in MATLAB, a new language for me and the complexity of the assignments combined with having to lookup syntax does not amount to the best of experiences. I then spent some time updating my resume and github in preparation for the career fair which I attended on Wednesday. I did not expect to go as well as it did given the virtual nature but it wasn’t too bad. …

What did you do this past week?

I hadn’t started my Collatz project until this past week and familiarizing myself with docker, gitlab and the other tools took a lot longer than I had expected. I also started working on my first project for Computer Vision which involved resizing images. Outside of class, I visited some trails located in Austin. If you have time on your hands, I highly recommend visiting Emma Long Metropolitan park.

What’s in your way?

I have a few assignments coming up this week in various classes. The career fair coming up is…

What did you do this past week?

I got late added to CS 363D Intro to data mining on Wednesday night so I spent a good amount of time catching up with the lectures and assignments for the class. Other then that, I have just been trying to keep up with some habits I developed over quarantine such as running everyday and cooking food everyday as well.

What’s in your way?

I am quite nervous about the career fair that is coming up. I am yet to update my resume with the experience gathered during this past summer…
